Think Vertically!
For those of you beginning to plan your vegetable gardens for this year, I encourage you to try vertical trellising.
Not only will you harvest cleaner and more fruit but you’ll also maximize small square foot gardening with plants that often grow unwieldy.
Grow Your Vegetables in Raised Vegetable Beds
Raised vegetable beds are more productive.
When filled with organic soil, 1 foot high and no more than 4 feet wide, they assure good root growth, high yield and an extended growing season.
They should be constructed in rectangular or square shapes with 2 x 12’s and rebar or of recycled plastic timbers such as Frame It All, available at Aqua Supply & Irrigation, East Amherst. Just remember , never use pressure treated wood to prevent soil contamination.
Composted soil delivery is available at CJ Krantz Topsoil. Also expect to freshen up the soil level after a growing season to bring the soil back up to the top of the boards.
And while you’re at it, visit Fruition Seeds for your organic flower and vegetable seeds.
Want a Patio?
According to Your Penny Saver’s 16 Things You Should Do to Save Money in 2020:
# 9. Want a Patio? Consider Concrete Over Pavers
Building a patio can add great value to your home, as well as creating enjoyable outdoor living space for you and your family. But patios can come at a great cost.
When we decided to add a patio to our home, we looked at the different surface options carefully. Although many landscapers would recommend pavers over concrete because of their durability over time, we decided that the cost savings was more important to us. We personally love the clean look of concrete as well.
Now one thing to remember with concrete is that it WILL crack eventually. But if you have a good concrete crew, it should be prepped right where the cracks are minimal. So we expect to see cracks, but are hopeful that it will be minimal.
Jacrist has and will continue to help you decide what is best for you in terms of taste, budget and style. Concrete has always been our go to material, at half the cost, for larger patios. and you would be very impressed in what colored stamped concrete can offer you with respect to long term upkeep and care.
