August is the month when landscaping ‘returns’ from the heat of July. The grass starts growing again and new growth is put out by shrubs and flowers. Unfortunately, weeds start out again. This year, crabgrass seems to be rampant.

Towards the end of the month, apply weed and feed to lawn and weed control to beds to limit problem weed growth. For existing weeds, spot spray with chemical weeder or 5% vinegar solution. Organic corn gluten can be used on lawns and beds to control new seeds from germinating; also, it is a mild nitrogen fertilizer;otherwise, Preen is readily available. If you only need to fertilize the lawn, apply towards the end of the month. This is the last time until fall to fertilize with slow release formula.

If your lawn is more than 50% rough grass and bent grass mixture, August is a great time to kill off and start new. Apply Roundup to lawn, regrade as needed and seed directly onto grass. Roundup will slowly kill existing grass, turning into top covering to hide newly applied grass seed. By the time the old grass dies out, the new seed will be sprouting.

Greetings All!

What a lovely time of year. The daylilies are exceptionaly this year; have you noticed them flowering their lovely hearts out? With the weather continuing its pleasant temperatures and low humidity, it’s a wonderful excuse to take an early morning or evening walk around your neighborhood. Great for the senses and spirits!

What To Do Now

Enjoy the fruits of your labor ~ take pictures of your landscaping and bring in flowers to decorate your home

Look for egg masses under leaves and branches for second generation insect infestation

Watch out for adult feeding of evergreens, especially black vine weevil, which will cut notches on the side of leaves. Treat with soil drench and foliar contact insecticide

Clip evergreens now that the new growth has hardened.

Freshen up mulch by adding more hardwood mulch or peat moss to bring out color

Fertilize your lawn the first week of July

Be mindful of dryness with lawn and beds; water as necessary but water well, not quickly and shallowly.
